Suggest Treatment For Persistent And Recurring Cough And Cold In An Infant
Question: Hi, My 4.5 months daughter was suffering from bad cold and cough and the doctor prescribed her coscopin- 4ml, phenergan-2.5ml, monocef-3.5ml and otrivin. After having these medicines for 5 days she became ok but again after 5 days she has started coughing. Can I again give her the same medicines.
Brief Answer:
Antibiotics would not help
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Irrespective of use of antibiotics, it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days.
You can give the same medicines except for Monocef.
Giving steam inhalation to your child helps in reducing the congestion. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear saline nasal drops in case of nose block.
Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.
Regards

Thanks for the reply doctor. I have few concerns:
1. Is phenergan(2.5ml) safe to give to 4.5months infants
2. Please suggest a substitute for coscopin, as my daughter cries a lot after having it

Brief Answer:
Safe
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.
1. Phenargan is safe to be given to a baby of this age. The only side effect is increased sleeping. However, that is not a cause for concern.
2. Coscopin need not be substituted. You can just skip it. Giving phenargan as well as steam inhalation should suffice.
Regards
