Question: Hi Doctor,

My son completed 1 year on Dec19th. We started with cow milk (packet milk in my city) recently. We gave it for last three days(around 80 ml) diluted with little water and today he started passing loose stools. Since morning 2 episodes were fine but last two were watery.

What should be done with respect to giving cow milk? Should we stop it temporarily?

He is having cough also since few days.

Brief Answer:
Yes, stop it temporarily

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Usually loose stools at this age is because of viral infection. However, in your child, it could be because of cow's milk allergy. As you have recently started cows milk, any allergy which your child has to it can show as loose stools and cough.

My advice:
1. Stop cows milk temporarily. Restart slowly after a week.
2. Give her rice gruel, oral re-hydration solution, cereals and tender coconut water etc.
3. ensure your child passes urine at least six to eight times daily.

Hope I have answered your query.
