default
Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: I have cough variant asthma and have just had a mild cold. However I recently changed my Medication from seretide to symbicort and have noticed that this time I am having a bad time with a chronic persistent cough night and day which is not relieved with Meds...should I go back on seretide which was very effective but gave me bad side effects with gritty vocal chords and speech??? Thanks

Brief Answer:
RTI exacerbated asthma, Yes, seritide can be the replacement

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Though Symbicort budesonide has the advantage of least systemic absorption, if the symptoms aren't well controlled one can switch to seritide. However, based on your description , it appears to be asthma exacerbated by a respiratory tract infection or allergy. Throat examination, chest auscultation, CBC, ESR, Chest x ray and pulse oximetery can be done. If a respiratory tract infection is found to be the case, antibiotics can be prescribed to treat the triggering factor. Steam inhalation, cough medication like hydrelline or acefyl can also be advised.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
