Suggest Treatment For Persistent Diarrhea

default
Posted on Fri, 2 Jun 2017
Question: Persistent diarrhea over 4 months, 2 to 3 times daily, usually following meals. One formed stool daily upon waking. No blood but there is mucous, occasional undigested food material. No weight loss, no pain, no dizziness. No change in diet. Responds minimally to Pepto, no response to NSAID. First case appeared after ingesting caustic peppers one day at lunch. Symptoms failed to subside. Before this, I was more bothered by constipation for which I took acidophilus and bulk forming fiber. Both of those supplements have been stopped with no change in diarrhea symptoms. Active adult, 63, 5'7'', 165 lbs, general good health. Recent diagnosis of prostate ca, 3+3=6, no mets. History of BPH, acid reflux, anxiety, kidney stones. EGD and colonoscopy 2016 clear except for mild hiatal hernia, scattered diverticula. Esophagus was stretched to 20 mm. Daily Trazodone, Paxil, Lovastatin, Omeprazole, potassium citrate, tadalafil. No new meds or supplements.

Brief Answer:
Due to increased gastrointestinal motility

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. I understand that you have increased frequency of passage of stool but that does not get classified as diarrhea and the stool is not watery. Rather, the increased frequency seems to be due to your increased gastrointestinal motility, the movement that moves the food forward as it gets digested and absorbed. You can try tab. lomofen (diphenoxylate hydrochloride 2.5 mg, atropine sulphate 0.025 mg, furazolidone 50 mg) [under the guidance of a doctor] and that can help in reducing the stool frequency. You need to ensure a good fluid intake and also need to maintain an intake of dietary fibers. Hopefully it would respond.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
