Suggest Treatment For Persistent Proteus Mirabilis Infection
Question: I have been battling a proteus mirabilis infection in my armpit. Keflex, then Clindamycin and lastly Augmentin. It still persists. I am immuno compromised having SLE and on immunosupression drugs. How can I get rid of this? Do I need an infecteous disease specialist?

Your main problem for persisting infection is immunosuppression caused by your drugs for SLE.
Now since you have tried all possible oral antibiotics then you should be given a course of Intravenous antibiotics for a week.
In case like yours I would recommend Piperacillin & Tazobactum antibiotic along with Amikacin.
You may also need to get evaluated for high blood sugar that might have resulted in case you have been treated with steroids.
You may also need to stop steroids in case you are on steroids for SLE management.
Another oral drug that is effective in resistant cases of Proteus infection is Cotrimoxazole (Septran).
However a lot people are allergic to Septran so less preferred.

Thank you for the reply. As I know this infection must be treated, I am concerned about side effects of the mentioned drugs, primarily due to having impaired kidneys from lupus and moderate hearing loss...actually from extensive antibiotic treatment in my late teens for chronic UTI's. Also, potential higher risk for serious side effects having SLE. My rheumo prefers I not use sulfa-based drugs unless as a last resort, which it may now be. I don't think I can stop my steroids. I hopefully will be following up with my internist tomorrow. Not sure if this is really a question. Just my initial thoughts...
