Question: Female 49 y/o with soar throat for over 10 days. progressively worse. Saw NP yesterday at Walgreens clinic and negative for strep and mono (excessive tiredness). Culture in process. Today soar throat is worse and when swallow it feels like pin needles and really raw. Nothing soothes it. No other symptoms other than sometimes ears get "clogged" like when you change altitude.

Brief Answer:
supportive care

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Sore throat with negative for strept and mono is likely to be a viral one. if you have fever associated with it , then there is no harm in starting prophylactic antibiotic. Apart from it conservative remedies like warm comforting beverages as green herbal tea mixed with honey, plenty of fluids intake, salt and garlic water gargles and use of decongestants and advil and some antihistamines like benadryl.

Sore throat even with out any treatment self resolves in 2 weeks XXXXXXX if its viral. Cultures will confirm the results but till then supportive care with considering antibiotics would be wise.

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Khan
