Detailed Answer:
Warm Welcomes. I appreciate your trust in HCM and assure you are on best portal on the globe for expert online medical services.
I have thoroughly reviewed health query you raised, and well realize all of those concerns. Being your physician, I will take care all of them today and will extend my expertise to solve the problems.

The reasons for such kind of local infections on tongue may be:
Food allergies (you already excluded it).
Drug induced-certain medications cause it.
Hypovitaminosis-Low levels of certain vitamins like vit.B12, Vit.D etc and low levels of nutrients that is very common at old age as diet is usually compromised at this age group.
Dehydration also contributes to the issues making tongue dry and scaled that is more vulnerable to infections.

Apply SOME-GEL or ORAJEL on the tongue and leave for 5 minutes. Then rinse with lukewarm saline water. Also do gargles with the same water for soothing effects. Do it many times a day.
Take plenty of fluids and keep a balanced healthy diet.
Take bland diet and after the meals take ACETAMINOPHEN as needed for pain and discomfort of tongue. It will also lower inflammation.
I will preferably suggest you to get a dentist's opinion as this is very common at this age that people get pinching of tongue due to misaligned teeth. Sometimes there is only a root (BD) of the tooth inside with no crown left over on that. It has spiked margins that pinches in the tongue and one sided swelling and pain makes this suspicion very likely to be the cause. Your dentist will make this spike smooth so that it doesn't hurt your tongue anymore.

Hope I addressed all the concerns you have. Let me know if you have further questions. I will be more than happy to clear any doubts. Please give your 'rating' (if agreed, Five Stars) to help me assist patients in a better way; and, please don't forget to click on 'Close The Discussion'.

Thank you for your information. I where a lower denture and think that may be rubbing against my tongue and I am going to have it checked. I know that the Protonix may also cause tongue irritation so I am going to stop for short period and see if that helps. Again, many thanks!

Yes, ill fitting dentures is one of the major issues that are overlooked. You must fix an appointment as soon as possible with a Dentist. Protonix if properly dissolved and diluted, cause less issues. But I have many patients who reported tongue irritation and even inflammation due to allergic reaction to Protonix. Yes, it will be a good idea to go off of Protonix for a while and see what is the outcome.
