Suggest Treatment For Persistent Upper Respiratory Infection

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Jan 2017
Question: Went to my doctor (gynecologist, actually) for regular checkup, with an upper respiratory infection tagging along - without any fever. It had continued to worsen instead of going away, and I guess my voice was really hoarse, and had a nagging little cough. Doc peered into nasal cavities and declared that I was REALLY runny (not in those words) prescribing a steroid regimen and ten days of Amox-Clav 500-125 MG. Steroids just gone, two nights ago, without being too graphic, I spent the night having repeating bouts of thick diarrhea - exhausting. Yesterday I ate lightly and consumed plenty of water, likewise today. This afternoon, my body began ejecting miniature firm globs of solids in a liquid medium. Sister-in-law blames the drugs. . . and I fear dehydration.
My head systems have completely disappeared, but I have 3 days of the antibiotic left. Thinking they may be the problem and would like to stop taking them - Friday heading out for a Christmas trip (Houston to Austin)

Brief Answer:
Could be antibiotic associated diarrhoea

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for writing in.

Sometimes Antibiotics can cause diarrhoea and an upset stomach.

In my clinical practice, I usually prescribe probiotics along with the antibiotics. Antibiotics destroy the good and bad bacteria. So supplementing with good bacteria (vizylac- lactobacilli) would be a good idea.

Probiotics like lactobacilli 2 or 3 times a day for the period you are on the antibiotic should help. ORS /Oral rehydration Solution can be taken to minimise dehydration due to loose motion. Foods to take would be rice gruel with a pinch of salt, tender coconut water, bread toast, apples, etc.

If the respiratory infection is not that severe, the course of antibiotics for just 5 to 7 days should be sufficient.

Drink warm water at regular intervals. Do steam inhalation three times a day.

Hope this information was helpful to you. Do get back to me if you have further queries.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Warm Regards,
Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan
