Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: I have a persistent wheezy cough and sore throat, Over the counter medications have no effect. Recent brief episode of early morning giddiness on waking. Doctor`s chest testing showed no congestion but the continuing irritation of my throat is causing lack of sleep . Appetite not affected but just tired of
this continual cough. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Possibility of post infectious bronchitis is more.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Since you are having wheezing cough, possibility of post infectious bronchitis is more.. It is common after viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI).
In chest auscultation, no abnormal sound is heard but still bronchitis can be there.
In my opinion you should follow these steps for better symptomatic relief.
1. Do warm water gargles 5-6 times a day.
2. Avoid oily and spicy food.
3. Drink plenty of fluids orally and keep your self hydrated.
4. Take broad spectrum antibiotic like levofloxacin or Azithromycin once a day for five days. They are not over the counter so please get a prescription from local doctor.
5. Also start combination of anti histamine and anti inflammatory drugs.
Usual time for recovery is 1-2 weeks.
So please let me know
1. Do you smoke?
2. Which drugs you have taken till now?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

I am a non smoker. No drugs prescribed as the feeling was that influenza does not respond to anti-biotics. I have been treating the cough with over the counter cough medicines which have eased the cough somewhat. Three days on from my enquiry and at last the cough is improving though I still have a very sore throat. Hopefully I am now over the worst and will go on with inhalations and the other advice you offered with regard to hydration etc., and anti-inflammatory drugs.
Thank you for your advice which helps when it is difficult to get to see a doctor when necessary.
