Suggest Treatment For Petechiae All Over Body
Question: Hi there. My 1 year old son has petehiae that are covering his entire body. Primarily on his face but they are on his torso, extremities, and buttock. There are thousands of them and they are TINY! They all stared out at reddish pink and most have turned a brownish color but are not fading away. His does have some new ones that are appearing that are the red color as well. He had a CBC 2 weeks ago and all levels were normal. ER pediatric doctor said it was likely a virus and they petechia would disappear in a few days. 2 weeks later they're not going away so my pediatrician ordered a STAT CBC w/ diff. These results also came back completely normal. My son shows no other symptoms. No fever, no loss of appetitive.... Nothing abnormal. The petehiae are prevalent and noticeable. I'm concerned but doctors don't seem to be due to the normal lab values. Where do I go from here? Why aren't these petehiae going away? Please help!

Dear Ms
Normal complete blood count including normal platelet count and absence of any symptoms is very reassuring.
In the absence of any symptoms especially fever is very reassuring and there is no cause for concern. I would agree with your doctors.
it would be very helpful if you could provide the clinical photograph of skin lesion for further assessment. you can either upload it in upload report or alternatively mail to YYYY@YYYY with subject line being "Attention Dr Deepak "
Awaiting your response

Hi there and thank you for your response. I will send a picture tonight. I guess my main concern now is why arent the petechiae disappearing? Normal platelett count, normal hgb, normal wbc count but little tiny pin prick sized spots still cover him all over. Why would these disappear on others and not on him? This is why im still not understanding things. I an of course relieved to hear that 2 normal CBC in a row indicates no need for concern but how long should i allow him to be covered in petechiae before I worry?

I am unable to get a photo that really shows the petechiae well since theyre very small and a light brown color. However, 3 physicians now have confirmed that it is in fact petechiae. However, with 2 CBC panels drawn 2 weeks apart are both completely normal then im hoping all is ok. As long as i can rule out leukemia then i feel better. Do yoh feel with the knowledge I've given you thaf we can rule out leukemia? Platelets, WBC, and RBC are normal.
Brief Answer:
There is no cause for concern
Detailed Answer:
Dear ms
Leukemia is usually associated with altered Blood count, if the CBC is normal on multiple occasion then its unlikley to be leukemia. rest be assured there is no cause for concern.
