Question: Thank you, my name is XXXXX and my husband has had burning in his lungs for about 8 mos. He is 62 years old 6"3 weight is 185. His blood pressure is 120/82. He works out daily for 1hr30 min along with yoga. Does not smoke or do drugs.the only problem is high closterol, he takes statens daily as of last year. He has had fatigue, chest discomfort cough. He thought he was just getting older and this was how his body was going to be. We saw dr today thinking we would get a referral to a pulmologist. Dr gave him a eke checked his troponin1 and blood work. The diagnosis was pneumonia although no apparent information from test.gave him azithromycim 500 mg. told him to come back in 2 weeks. My question Can a person have pneumonia for 8 mos? That causes burning of lungs? No other symptoms? And it be pneumonia? No fever, just pain in lungs. Thank you so much.

Brief Answer:
Chronic Geriatric Pneumonia Possible

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. As far as pneumonia is concerned in old age people. It can be as prolonged as one year. It may not be there for whole 8 months. It might have shown up later after initial complains of discomfort and fatigue and cough. They should have though sorted out the organism responsible and then treated specifically for that to prevent any resistance.
But giving empiric therapy a shot is also wise. If hubby did not respond to azithromycin they will run some further labs to sort out the organism responsible and its predisposition to susceptible antibiotics and then treatment and recovery will be more prompt.

He is already practising good hygiene and does not smoke. Just get him vaccinated and use the antibiotics prescribed and get a follow up after 2 weeks. I am sure he will respond. It is treatable. Just eneds the proper care which he is getting in guise of you.

You should have a look at this article. It will give you idea about pneumonia vaccines and educate you a bit further about pneumonia.
