Suggest Treatment For Positional Vertigo

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Nov 2015
Question: Hi there,
When I close my eyes and lay down, I feel slightly as if I'm moving or at least not completely still. This causes a bit of anxiety. Also, I feel weakness in my legs (it's not a lot, but it is noticable). I don't feel dizzy otherwise or when I'm sitting down. The back of my head also feels a little "cold" or "numb" but this feeling goes away if I touch it, and returns but it is not "pain". I don't lose balance or have any other symptoms. Someone told me it could be a b12 deficency. I went to the doctor once and she did these excercises and movements with my hands, head, legs and feet (pulling, pushing, etc) and said she has no reason to believe that something is wrong with my head. I'm just a little worried as to what it could be. I'm 21 years old. About 155lbs and 6'1 in height.

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of positional vertigo.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms and agree with your doctor that these symptoms do not suggest any serious brain disease.

The symptoms are most likely due to benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, which is caused due to a minor dysfunction in the inner ear. This settles on own in a few days. Vestibular adaptation exercises may be done to prevent its recurrence in future.

It would also be a good idea to exclude vitamin B12 deficiency.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Thank you for your response,

I would also like to ask if fuzzy feeling on sides of head by ears is caused by this. It goes away when I touch that area and comes back if I focus on it. If I am busy I don't feel anything. About a year and half ago a doctor told me that it is no reason for concern, he also said it may be only psychological because it goes away when I touch it, and I am able to ignore it if I am busy. Can this be caused, as he said, psychologically and by stress/anxiety? It is almost like muscles twitching or clicking.

Brief Answer:
Stress and anxiety can aggravate it.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

Stress or anxiety can aggravate these symptoms but would not be the sole cause. It is common for neurological symptoms especially minor ones to disappear when busy.

Best wishes,
