Suggest Treatment For Post Nasal Drip While On Percocet

Posted on Mon, 26 Sep 2016
Question: I took large doses of 10mg percocet for 5 days (about 6 a day). Last dose Fri night. Sat am, during an aerobic class that I teach, I went into a push-up position and it looked like I was suffocating. From that time until now, I cannot take a deep breath without coughing and even shallow breathing can hurt - sensation feels as if I was in a pool too long. I do notice a sudden post nasal drip. Additional symptoms are body and joint aches and yesterday I had a lot of swelling in my calves (not completely uncommon for me. Could this be withdrawal symptoms and a coincidental beginning of a cold. The painful breathing is new. Today when I take a deep breath, i feel pain in my ribs, which I would normally consider muscle soreness. I also have a terrible taste in my mouth

Brief Answer:
It is more likely percocet withdrawal

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

Although there are classical symptoms of Percocet withdrawal but the pain on breathing could not be explained on the basis of this.It is possible that along with withdrawal there is respiratory tract infection which is complicating picture.

In addition the withdrawal symptoms will disappear in next one to two days as there is short duration of intake (5 days).

I hope this helps you.
If you have more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards.

I'm one of those horrible WEB-MD researchers -
I was concerned, because of my weird physical reaction to push ups (my whole face got red and my eyes got red and it looked like I was being choked) along with the swelling in my calves that there could be something more serious. I'm guessing that doesn't seem likely to you?

Brief Answer:
You are right

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

You are right in saying that there is less chance of something serious as red face and eyes can be indicative of upper respiratory tract infection and calves swelling is not new and unlikely to be related with current problems.

Having said this if there is worsening of symptoms it is always better to visit ED as it is not possible for someone to help you sitting thousand miles away.

I hope this helps you further.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for my future patients.
