Suggest Treatment For Pounding Sensation In The Chest, Throat, Hands And Face

Question: What does it mean when your heart is pounding .. like I can feel it in my chest, throat and face. Even my hands. I do have a tendency to anxiety and had it for years but I never feel my heart pound consistently for 24h or more. I usually just feel like I can't breathe/tight chest. My face also feels flushed and I have a pressure in my head. I do not have an overactive thyroid, no anemia and no serious health conditions that i am aware of. I have however not been moving / walking much lately and been sitting down a lot and have consumed alcohol more than usual due to holidays but haven't had any alcohol since over 30 hours . I read stuff about palpitations and anxiety but as it's unusual for me I am worried. I'm 29 and never had this. I do have slightly high blood pressure due to taking contraception pill. I seem to be healthy though so could this really just be anxiety? It's annoying and doesn't let me sleep nor relax

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that your symptoms seem to be related to anxiety.

Anxiety can mimic all this clinical scenario by activating the sympathetic nervous system and increasing the plasma levels or circulating adrenaline and noradrenaline.

This is a normal reaction which happens in every normal person, but some susceptible persons are more sensitive to these changes.

Anyway, I would recommend you to check your actual blood pressure values, because high blood pressure can cause these symptoms too.

If your blood pressure values are above 140/90 mm Hg most of the time, you should consult with your attending physician and have some tests to exclude other secondary causes of high blood pressure (complete blood count, chest X ray study, thyroid hormone levels, kidney and liver function tests, blood electrolytes). In such case it would be necessary to stop taking contraception pills too.

I would also advise you to reduce caffeine intake.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
