Question: Pressure in center lower abdomen up to naval. Frequent (4 today) bowel movements and frequent urination. Urine stream is weak and bladder doesn't fully empty. Have history of prostititis (sp). This has been going on for a couple weeks, but additional pain in lower left abdomen and sometime lower right has persisted since late October of 2014.

Brief Answer:
Following causes to frequent bowel movements and urination...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and can say as following:

1. Frequent bowel movements that you experienced today might be related to:
- alimentary intoxication due to foods you might have consumed?
- viral/protozoan infection
- IBD flare up as you have been diagnosed with inflammation of descending colon
- medications you might be using (e.g. antibiotics causing alteration of intestinal flora)

2. Taking into account your personal history of prostatitis, frequent urination is related to bladder not being fully emptied. In such cases, the urine is flowing back to bladder and up to kidney causing urinary tract infection (UTI). Urine analysis and culture together with abdominal ultrasound are advised to determine if you have UTI and treat with antibiotics.

Prostatitis flare up is also to consider, PSA testing should be also carried out.
You are mentioning to be using bp meds too. Can you please tell the name of those meds; if you have been prescribed diuretics, they might also cause frequent urination.

3. For the moment, I advise to:
- increase fluids intake
- avoid drinking fluids in the afternoon, or up to 4 hours before bedtime
- avoid alcohol/caffeinated drinks
- take tasectan/pepto bismol to reduce bowel movements
- take probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora
- mixed herbal tea containing uva-ursi, fern stone, cranberry and zinc can be helpful in reducing uro-genital symptoms
- anti-inflammatory medications are also advised (e.g. ibuprofen, mephenamic acid, etc.)

Hope it was of help!

Thank you for the response. The BP medication is Amlodipine which I see is a calcium channel blocker. (Whatever that is) This brings up another question. Would this med cause calcium deposits, say in your Aorta? My primary told me there was a little build-up there when I had a follow-up to my last chest xray. (2 -3 months ago. Maybe it's naturally occurring at my age?

Prostatitis: I already try to avoid spicy foods, caffeine, etc. I had my annual check-up with my Urologist about 3 months ago. Blood & urine were fine and PSA was 1.1 Note: Sexual activity exacerbates this problem or sometimes actually initiates it.

IBS: I actually did an exercise with my chiropractor to try and determine if certain foods were causing the intestinal inflammation. Some were (I.E. starches, anything fermented such as yeast, vinegars, etc.) and I've been mostly avoiding them although it's been very difficult. I've never had a stool sample done and I can't tell if there is blood in it. I don't have a fever or feel ill, but sometimes experience mild nausea.

Lower back: The bulging and herniated discs are supposedly minor, but they are sore all the time. Pain sometimes extends to both groin areas and sometimes down left leg.

Summation: I know this is more info. than I originally gave, but I could write a book! Sometimes you have to think awhile to remember everything and one little thing could be the key to everything. I think its safe to say that I may have more than one thing going on OR are the inflamed intestines affecting the prostate and bladder? Can the prostate be affecting the intestines? Can my back problem be affecting everything? I'd like to pack up my box of records and check in to the XXXXXXX Clinic and have them look at everything, but I can't come home with a $50,000 bill! Here at home, I just seem to get passed from Primary to specialist to specialist and nothing is ever really diagnosed yet I'm still in pain and of course, stressed. (Because when you don't have an answer, you assume it's got to be cancer.) Sorry to vent, but I'm am my wit's end right now. I appreciate any help you can give.

Brief Answer:
Patience and doing the right things is needed...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Sorry for the late reply due to my XXXXXXX clinical consultations.

1. Amlodipine and other calcium channel blockers do not cause narrowing of aorta despite their names, which has nothing to do with aorta but with their mechanism of action.

The narrowing of aorta or other blood vessels are due to deposits of cholesterol and other substances including circulating calcium that can also make the vessels rigid.

This is what your doctor reported as "build-up".

2. With regards to prostatitis, diet and lifestyle changes can help together with anti-inflammatory medications and antibiotics.

3. Apart diet changes for IBS, I'll also recommend to run stool tests (e.g. stool analysis, examination for ova/parasites).

4. The lower back pain is also related to herniated discs which suppress the nearby nerves giving your clinical presentation.

5. If all the tests you ran until now did not reveal any clue for cancer, then, your symptoms are not related to cancer although they seem fastidious.

6. I understand you've been annoyed from your health problems, however, I can say that pain is due to:
- prostatitis
- herniated discs
- inflammation of bowels

altogether. Neither of them is causing the other; but altogether, they are giving the pain you feel. Once you take the most accurate treatment, the pain will be subsided too.

Knowing and avoiding what is triggering the pain can also help.

All the best!
