Brief Answer:
reduce transmission, bolster immunity

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The flu and common cold are spread by contact with secretions when a person coughs or sneezes or if he comes into contact with a surface that has infected secretions.
Eg if a person with the flu has coughed/sneezed and particles have come unto a surface or if a person's nasal secretions have come unto surface

If this infected surface is touched and the infected hand then brought to the nose or eyes, infection occurs.

If your son is able to use a hand disinfected regularly when at school and out and about elsewhere, he would reduce the chance of getting sick.

Other than this, his immune system may need to be bolstered.

This can be done by using a wide range of fruits (particularly citrus with high vitamin c) and vegetables (for other minerals/vitamins)
A multivitamin supplement would also help.

In addition, it has been found the gut has a lot of the body's immunity. Probiotics help to increase immunity.
He can obtain these from yogurts with probiotics or by the use of plain probiotics from your local pharmacy or retail store.

Summary: (1)transmitted by contact with secretions on a surface or if a person coughs/sneezes into face
(2)by use of a hand sanitizer on the hand prevent transfer of secretions from hand to nose and eyes
(3)bolster immunity by use of fruits and vegetables, supplements and probiotics

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
