Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Meningioma
I want to consult regarding recurrent meningioma. Can you please let me know the convinient time to discuss on this.
My mom aged 46 years has undergone Craniotomy surgery twice within 18 months duration. First one on Aug'12 and the second one on May'14.
In the first Biopsy, tumor is recognised as WHO Grade-I Meningioma.
In Second Biopsy, tumor is recognised as WHO Grade-II Atypical Meningioma.
On observing the upgrading(from Grade-I to Grade-II) tumor within short span, Doctor suggested to go for Radiotherapy. So one of the Radiation Oncologist prescribed us to go for RapidArc Radiotherapy. Even after 2 months of the complete 30 radiation doses, i even doubt the presence of tumor, as mom is getting seizures frequently.
I just want to know is there any permanent cure for this type of recurrent meningiomas.
Any help/suggestion will really be appreciated and will mean us a lot. Thanks in Advance.
Thanks,

Permanent cure not possible
Detailed Answer:
Hi
I have gone through your moms history and reports.
The most common treatment option for recurrent meningioma is additional surgery.
If surgery cannot be performed, radiation therapy is generally used.
In addition patient can still receive care to manage the symptoms caused by the tumor by continuing anti seizures medications with doctors advise.
Symptom management is always important since the symptoms of meningioma can interfere with a person’s quality of life.
Permanent cure for this type of recurrent meningioma is not possible.
If treatment above is not successful the disease may be called advanced or terminal.
Patients who have advanced disease are expected to live less than six months.
Palliative care called hospice care which is designed to provide the best possible quality of life for people who are near the end of life are suggested for these type of patients.

Thanks for your detailed response.
I agree to the things adviced by you, but as per surgeon in my mom's case meningiomas will not lead to advanced stage. how true does this statement hold??
If considered the worst case, is there any prevention which we could take to avoid getting into Terminal or advanced stage?
Thanks,

Radiosurgery follwed by chemotherapy
Detailed Answer:
Hi
I do not agree with your surgeon.
Since your mother is having recurrence of meningioma i will advise her to undergo stereotactic radiosurgery.
In this procedure a single high dose of radiation is directly to the tumor and not healthy tissues.
To prevent the disease going to terminal stage i will also advise chemotherapy after radiosurgery.
Common ways to give chemotherapy include an intravenous (IV) tube placed into a vein using a needle or in a pill or capsule that is swallowed orally.
A chemotherapy regimen usually consists of a specific number of cycles given over a set period of time.
The goal of chemotherapy is to to destroy any tumor remaining after surgery, slow the tumors growth , reduce her symptoms and prevent the tumour getting to advanced stage.
If you have no more clarifications then please rate the answer and close the thread.

diet rich in fruits and vegetables
Detailed Answer:
Hi
She must try to stay healthy during her treatment for a meningioma by taking care of herself.
She must eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and get moderate exercise daily if her doctor allows it.
She needs to get enough sleep so that she wakes feeling rested.
She must reduce stress in her life by focusing on what's important to her.
These measures won't cure her meningioma, but they may help her feel better as she recovers from surgery or help her to cope during radiation therapy.
