Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Polyps

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Apr 2015
Question: I am 65 with a history of polyps. I had a recent colonoscopy which showed 5 mm sessile polyp in ascending colong. What are chances it is cancerous and can it recur?

I previously had a polypectomy of a .5 cm adenomatous polyp in 2012.
The 5 mm sessile polyp was successfully removed. What are chances it
could be cancerous?

Brief Answer:
CHANCES OF CANCER IS THERE, STRICT FOLLOWUP NEEDED

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in healthcaremagic.com
This is Dr. Swarnava dattagupta answering your query.

I understand your concern.
Adenomatous polyps are mostly precancerous i.e. they can turn into cancer in due time if proper treatment is not advocated. Thats why, i ask such patients to get a strict followup done, every 2-3 years.
If you have history of polyps and polyps leading to cancer of colon in your family, then a genetic testing is needed for APC gene. If it is found positive, then chances of cancer increases considerably. Also, colonoscopy is primarily done with a biopsy to assess the intestine and the number and extent of polyps. The biopsy results are important. It can detect cancerous cells by histological assessment. And yes, recurrence is not uncommon in these cases.
I would suggest you to get a gene testing done and get a biopsy taken from polypoid mass. You can consult your treating doctor about this. He would be able to lead you further.

Hope i have answered your question.
If you have any further questions i will be happy to help.
Regards
