Posted on Mon, 12 Oct 2015
Question: I am a 69 yr old women and have had no sex with my husband for 8 years. I have reoccuring sores on the sides of my tongue causing pain in my throat and my ear. I have been put on antibiotics usually penicillins 4 times since XXXXXXX which help but after 5 or 6 days they come back accompanied with severe fatigue. Now I am on Macrobid for a second bladder infection but it isn't helping my tongue. I am on budesonide for collagenas colitis which I must take for the rest of my life. It had steroids in it. I am afraid my immune system is compromised.

Brief Answer:
Sadly you are right, oral and upper respiratory tract infections

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I do believe you are correct, as being on antibiotics for such a long time (albeit intermittently) can also leave your body susceptible to fungal infections, which in my opinion can also contribute to the deterioration of oral health.

As for the steroids, as you know they can result in immunosuppression which can promote infections (like the one in your upper respiratory system and oral cavity). Unfortunately, in such cases there is nothing much that can be done but continue with antibiotics as and when necessary.

Your immune system shall stay compromised as long as you are on the steroids ma'am, I am sorry to inform you about this. You could actually speak to your doctor about providing you with something to boost your immune system that may help.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
