Suggest Treatment For Recurring Pain In Lower Back

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Jun 2015
Question: Dear Doctor-I am a golfer and strained my lower back muscles (right side) swinging. I did this May 9th. I was barely able to walk, but about 60 minutes after I stopped playing, I was able to walk without pain. On May 16th, I was feeling no pain and tried to play again. After only a few swings the pain returned and I stopped immediately. I went home and applied ice for a few hours and had no trouble sitting and walking. I have a big tournament May 29th.

I am a relatively healthy, active 58 year old Caucasian male. I am 6'2", 210 lbs. Here are my questions:

1-What can I do to expedite healing? I have a Chiropractor who could apply electric stimulus, heat laser, and massage.
2-Would a cortisone injection help? If so, when would it be most effective?
3-What medications are indicated for the day of the tournament to minimize the pain?
4-With all the elements above, what are the odds for me being able to play please?

Thank You in advance for your response, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Laser and TENS therapy can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
1. The return of pin after a few swings is suggestive of an incomplete healing. To increase the healing it is best to have laser, massage and TENS therapy from your chiropractor. Rest and avoiding the painful movements will also help. Regular hot compress in the area will also help.
2. Cortisone injection will help in reducing the inflammation around the area of injury. It is best to take an injection at least a week prior to the event for best effect.
3. You will need strong pain killers and muscle relaxants to decrease the pain. You can take Tramadol and tizanidine after getting it prescribed from your orthopedician.
4. Since the event is less than 2 weeks away, complete healing is not expected in spite of best efforts as you will not be able to take rest properly. In case the pain persists after a few shots then you will need strong pain killers and it can affect your performance.
I hope this answers your query.
