Suggest Treatment For Redness And Swelling In The Body After An Injury

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Nov 2016
Question: I fell against an iron bedframe 3 weeks ago and still have redness and swelling. Injury was caused by all of my weight and forward momentum against the bed frame. Caused a concave impression against my shitbone. Tore the tissues from the bone. By the time I got home it was the size of a goose egg. The skin wasn't broken, my leg ankle and foot swelled and there was blood pooling in my foot. I kept it on ice and elevated. Has never throbbed unless I put my weight on it. That pain was unbearable but now is mostly gone. A 2hour shopping trip yesterday caused additional redness swelling and pain I had to ice and elevate. I am allergic to all morphine or codeine pain killers. I took Tramadol occasionally... Can't imagine being cut on without any painkillers. I have photos

My question disappeared and I am not sure how I did that? What kind of doctor should I go to? I only have specialists

Brief Answer:
either your primary care physician or an orthopedics specialist

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

with this kind of injury either your primary care physician or an orthopedics specialist should make sure that you haven't broken any bone and that the flow in your blood vessels is normal. If you had serious arterial obstruction because of a large hematoma then I'm sure you would have had serious symptoms and you would have visited the ER. What's concerning in your case is that hematomas exert pressure on the surrounding tissues including the veins. It may increase the risk for thrombosis. Swelling, pain, redness and warmth are signs of inflammation which commonly accompanied such disorders. I'm not diagnosing anything right now... I'm just pointing out potential problems for you to investigate with your doctor. So an ultrasound scan of the veins will confirm or exclude this possibility.

It's possible that these symptoms are just the remnants of bad injury on the soft tissues. But the more serious causes like the one I've mentioned above should have to be excluded first.

So in conclusion either your primary care physician or an orthopedics specialist should have a look at your leg. In cases like yours I would have asked for an ultrasound scan of the leg veins too.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
