Suggest Treatment For Rough Patches Around The Nose

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Question: I have had rough patches round my nose for a few years now. Winter months def make it worst but everything I do from exfoliating twice a week, using a good moisturizing cream to getting facials once a month seem to not be working. I went to the dermatologist and she believed it was seborrhea dermatitis but the creams she gave me were sort of trial/error and nothing seems to be working. I get facials and the roughness goes away for a few days but then comes back. I am 25..and I don't know what else to do about my skin.

I have attached two pictures of my face. I do have some dandruff on my scalp from the dry weather but not eyebrows. Yes- the patches can be itchy but I try not to itch them. I only touch my face when washing and putting cream on.

Brief Answer:
"Dyssebacia": mild form of "Seborrheic dermatitis": various suggestiions.

Detailed Answer:
Hello young lady,

Welcome again to the forum and thanks for your swift follow up with picture.

After analyzing the picture with diligence I can make out the condition is mild form of "Seborrheic dermatitis" which we call as "dyssebacia".

To tell you medically regarding ""dyssebacia""- it is mild inflammation of the sebaceous glands (oil glands) which causes eruptions, mild to moderate scaling and flaking with redness and itching of variable degree. It basically involves the area around nose and nasolabial folds and surrounding skin on cheeks.

There are multiple factors causing the problem including dietary (nutritional or lack of proper nutrients), environmental including sun light as main aggravating factors with fungus and many more.

In my patients with your kind of condition I prefer to use a mild steroid preparation such as desonide lotion for two times a day for 7 days. Once the redness an itching is reduced then I shift my patients on plane anti-fungal cream such as ketoconazole 2 % cream as maintenance therapy. Both these preparations should be applied in a very thin layer so that it should not be visible to the naked eye.

For itching I prefer to give a simple tablet of loratadine for one to two times a day after meals.

As I can get that you do have bit of dandruff and I can see open pores which show high oil activity so a proper scalp wash with anti-fungal shampoo help in reducing the propensity of recurrence.

A sun protection is must to take care of sun aggravation and redness.

I prefer to suggest a good diet to my patients with lots of fruits and green vegetables on daily basis. It helps in good regeneration power of skin and reduces the chances of nutritional factors as contributing cause.

I hope the above information will help you. If you have further queries I will be happy to help.

"Wish you good health"

Dr Sanjay Kumar Kanodia
