Question: Hi,
I am concerned about a reddish bump behind my ear. its about the size of a garden pea and tender to touch. It is either a pimple or lymph node. Is there an easy way to tell the difference? It does feel like a sore pimple but is that the same feeling i would get if it was a lymph node?
Brief Answer:
Can be Folliculitis
Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
Hi , I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern.
The location you are describing is not a classical for pimple.
A lymph node is usually tender, movable and inside the skin while a pimple is on the skin.
A lymph node has a normal overlying skin. It is not red.
However, there are chances of folliculitis, which can present like this.
Tell me following things:
1. Any fever, sore throat, ear discharge recently?
2. Since how long are you having this?
3. Attach a photograph of that area.
4. Any weight loss, cough and expectoration?
This is my personal opinion based on details available here. Reply with the answers and do attach a pic.

i did have a cold but thats been gone for two weeks now. I feel like i have another swollen lymph node in the corner of my jaw/neck. this one is not painful, roughly the same size but not red. the bump behind my ear only for two days but the one under my jaw two weeks.
i cant work out how to attach a photo to this thread unfortunately. can u explain how its done?
Brief Answer:
Give me details
Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
It is very unlikely to have lymph nodes enlarged after 2 weeks of cold.
I had also asked you other questions, would get a better idea about your condition, if you could give me details.
Regarding attaching pic, you can attach it where you have option to attach the reports, or you can alternatively mail it to our customer care team at YYYY@YYYY , mention your id and my name in your mail.

thanks have added the picture.
I wouldnt say the lymph node under my jaw is swollen but i can feel it and i cant feel one on the other side in the same place. I ask a doctor on here and he said lymph nodes could remain hard like that for up to a month after infection. It hasnt grown in size and if anything has got smaller i think. It isnt visable but i can feel it when put my head back.
to answer your questions i didnt have fever when i had my cold but had a sore throat. no ear pain or discharge. no weight loss

Dear Friend.
If your doctor has examined you and he says it is a lymph node, he must be right. Doctors can easily differentiate lymph node and pimple on examination.
Yes, he is right, lymph node might persist for a long after infection. But you developed it later, the one near your ear.
I have not received the pic.
Still, my suggestion is that if it is painful and has red overlying skin, then you may apply an antibiotic cream like T-Bact over it. If it is folliculitis or Furunculosis, it would subside in a 5-7 days.
If it still persists, you should see a doctor and get your self examined and investigated.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
