Suggest Treatment For Scalp Sores And Pimples

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Feb 2016
Question: I am 43, healthy male, I exercise and do not smoke nor drink much. About 6-8 months ago I started to get scalp sores, much like a pimple that's under the skin, hurts to push on it. Some never come to a head, some do, but no puss, just clear liquid. I get them cyclically, with as much as 10 at a time. I have psoriasis in on one area of my body, inner right thigh, but that has become manageable over time and doesn't bother me anymore. I have never had dandruff, nor balding, and the sores are not itchy at all. So, I am starting here before seeing a dermatologist, just to ask for a sort of top 5 issues it could be; could you help me with that? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Most likely a scalp infection; Oral antibiotic and cetrimide shampoo

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have gone through your query and I have understood your concern.

Recurrent bumps on scalp that come off and on, resolve on their own and are painful when pressed on to, is most likely a case of bacterial folliculitis.
If I was the treating doctor I would suggest a course of an Oral antibiotic for a week for a flare. My choice of an oral antibiotic would be either Amoxicillin Or Cephalexin for a week. I would also suggest you to use a regular shampoo, specially the one which contains cetrimide 5% to 10%. Cetrimide is antimicrobial, antiseptic and therefore would help you by preventing them from reforming.
Avoid using any cosmetics on scalp like oils, gels, serum for your hair, in case you use them. Just keep the scalp clean.

Hello Dr. Kakkar,

Thank you for your response.

I had to see a dermatologist here in Singapore (to get the prescriptions) and he gave me Doxyline (http://www.ndrugs.com/?s=doxyline), which is basically doxycycline... is this also effective?
