Brief Answer:
Quite a lot!

Detailed Answer:
Everyone gets back pain. in about 10% of people the pain is not just a minor muscle but something actually broken--the majority of which is sciatica from a "slipped disk". In this condition, the fluid filled sacs between the vertebrae slip out and hit a nerve or the spine feeling even worse than that sounds! Sciatica is pain running in the path of the hit nerve (the sciatic nerve).
Surgery to remove it is the last resort and doesn't help pain (but does prevent paralysis).
Rest, maybe anti-inflammatories (steroid or non-steroidal), and it eases of in the vast majority of those with disks, pretty much like the other 90%. Physical therapy (and ballroom dance, tai chi and other methods of body awareness) help prevent recurrences. Other pain treatments:
Heating pad
Accupuncture and/or chiropracty probably DO work.
Muscle relaxants (carisoprodel works on the spine; probably the best)
Nerve pills (that damp down nerves) including anti-epileptics gabapentin and pregabalin also amitryptiline
Nerve pills that work on pain tramadol
and.. narcotics.
Hope you are feeling better soon
