Suggest Treatment For Sebaceous Hyperplasia On The Face

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Mar 2017
Question: Hello....I have a question pertaining to what I understand are genetic cancer predisposition syndromes, Lynch Syndrome and Muir Torre. I was recently diagnosed with sebaceous hyperplasia on my face and I also have what I believe are Fordyce spots, quite numerous, inside both sides of my cheek and on my lips. Unfortunately, I consulted "Dr. Google" and while I understand that Fordyce spots and sebaceous hyperplasia are benign and common in the general population, I ran across some articles and information saying that they may be linked to the cancer predisposition syndromes. I suffer from health anxiety, and am just looking for some reassurance that having sebaceous hyperplasia and Fordyce spots is not a marker for those syndromes. I've just had a screening colonoscopy which came back clean (im turning 50), I have had routine bloowork all normal, yearly mammograms and Pap smears all normal, etc. There is no colorectal or other cancers in my family. Thank you for your time and input!

Brief Answer:
Hello . There is no association

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear.

I have gone through your query and i understand your concern. So, so far till now, there is no definite association which has been proven between fordyce spots and hereditary cancer syndromes. Same holds true for sebaceous hyperplasia and muir torr syndrome. Sebaceous adenoma may be associated with muir torr but not hyperplasia.

I donot see any reason as you donot have any history or cancer, and your coonoscopy is clean. Relax and donot worry.

Thanks and regards

Oh Dr. Sundrayal, thank you so very much for your kind and reassuring answer!!! I have told myself again and again not to consult google for health conditions and I keep falling into that trap. Of course, I end up finding obscure and rare diseases and somehow think that's what I have. I think I have "medical student syndrome" although I attended law school and actually am an attorney.

I've signed up for the monthly subscription for unlimited questions on Health Care Magic, and it has been wonderful and reassuring to consult with real doctors to put my mind at ease.

Thank you again and have a wonderful day.
