Suggest Treatment For Seizures In A Premature Baby

default
Posted on Wed, 11 May 2016
Question: Hello, my baby was born premature at 24 weeks and 6 days. She had a brain bleed grade 3 which had cleared up by the time we left the NICU. She is also on Lansoprazole for bad reflux at 1.8ml twice per day which I have read can cause seizures. She just had a seizure for the first time that lasted 30 seconds. He head and arms jerked while she was feeding but she remained conscious and continued eating. What should I do since it is a Sunday night and should I give her the second dose of the medication? I will call the pediatrician tomorrow. Without the medication she is in extreme pain eating.
She is 4 months adjusted right now.

Brief Answer:
Seizures

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I am sorry this happened. I would do two things at this time:
1. Hold off on the second dose of lansoprazole until cleared by her doctor.
2. Call the doctor on call for her doctor tonight rather than waiting until tomorrow. He or she may want your daughter evaluated tonight as she just had the seizure and sometimes it is best to get information shortly after this. It's possible her own doctor takes his or her own calls instead of sharing calls with a group. So call his/her office number and it will probably be routed and you will talk to a pediatrician.

So don't wait until tomorrow to be polite. Call now.
