Suggest Treatment For Severe Acid Reflux Despite Medication

default
Posted on Thu, 1 Jun 2017
Question: I've got fibromyalgia which has the most bizarre symptoms. Anyway I have to take antiacids for Baretts Esopgagus. And it seems that I have more acid then ever before.
Is that the result of taking prilosec or having fibro. Fibromyalgia seems to effect every thing. I have IBS, and more UTIs because of it too. Is the extra acid reflux because of taking anti acids? What DO I do?

Brief Answer:
Information

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Prilosec can, unfortunately, cause increased reflux in some people. I personally have had this experience from Prilosec.

Prilosec (omeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor and this class of drugs greatly decreases acid production. It can also increase the hormone gastrin which then increases acid production. I don't know if this is the mechanism by which it can increase reflux, or if it is from irritation or changing some other aspect of digestion or the digestive tract.

People with autoimmune disorders and immune dysfunctions tend to be more sensitive to medications and to their side effects and this applies to fibromyalgia too. Sometimes lower dosages of meds are needed to try to avoid these in people with fibromyalgia.

My suggestions are to consider
1. A different PPI such as pantaprozole. Sometimes experimenting with a different one can make a difference.
2. Trying a different class of medication, such as instead of a PPI to try an H2 blocker such as ranitidine (Zantac) 150 mg twice a day. But before doing something like this, consult with your GI doctor first. Also, keep in mind that when going off of a PPI there can be rebound increase in acid production for awhile.

I hope this helps. I feel for you, I do.
