
Suggest Treatment For Severe Acid Reflux Despite Taking Zantac

Question: My wife has been diagnosed with acid reflux, taken Zantac, Prilosec(40mg) with very little relief, prior to seeing her PC is there a very good OTC medication for stop gap relief?

Omeprazole is a PPI which is very much effective in treating symptoms of GERD. You should continue it. My advise would be to add a pro kinetic like metoclopramide or domeperidone with it. OTC meds to counter GERD would include Antacids at best. You can try them. Polycrol and Mucaine are two products which are effective. Both are in syrup form and contain antacids. They may be available by a different brand name in your local pharmacy.
