Suggest Treatment For Severe Acid Reflux

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Feb 2017
Question: I went to the ER with back pain Sunday. Dr gave me a shot of morphine, toradol, and prednisone pills. Sent me home with a script for the 2 latter. Tues night I started having severe acid reflux where my entire body was on fire and my stomach was like a fire pit. Around 4 a m. I started throwing up hot liquid, followed by bouts of thick stuff that almost choked me to death, then the severe vomiting started. This went on off and on until last night but then the severe stomach cramps have started. No more vomiting, but the cramps are excruciating. I've tried to eat some soup, a little mac and cheese last night, but the cramps only get worse. Today I've had nothing but 7up, but that makes the cramping worse. No loose bowels, but go to the bathroom when the cramping is at it's worse. I am weak from not eating but the pain is not worth the food. I have barretts esophogus, high bp, high cholesterol, and diabetes, but not on meds at the moment for diabetes. I take cymbalta, amlodophine, crestor, ambien, gabapentin, pramexerole and pantaprzole on a regular basis although they are making my stomach burn.

Brief Answer:
Severe gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.

Your symptoms indicate an exacerbation of gastritis or gastroduodenal ulcers & associated colic

Would you clarify a few things for me, please?
-do you smoke or consume alcohol
I recommend :
-a physician consult right away.
-a Proton pump inhibitor by intravenous administration if not able to keep anything down.
-an antiemetic, if required.
-have liquid diet and take fluids in small sips (a tablespoon or 2 ever 5 minutes.
-avoid carbonated, sugary and caffeinated drinks.
-food and drinks should be lukewarm or cool. Cool milk is a natural antacid. Have half a cup thrice a day.
- antispasmodics will help as well
- an endoscopy may be necessary if treatment doesn't help in a few weeks.

Please consult your doctor as soon as possible to check for dehydration and treat promptly. Both toradol and prednisone can cause or worsen gastritis and ulcers.
Your usual pantoprazole is not helping now, especially as you can't keep food down.

Hope this helps and you feel better soon.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health.
Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
