Suggest Treatment For Severe Back Pain And Pain In Ribs

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Feb 2016
Question: Ive had bsck pain for many years and recently inquired about pain in lower back both along the spine and lower ribs in back.
I we to doctor and he said it was muscular for sure but did bloodwork, urinalysis snd xrays. All came back normal. I asked about my concern about kidneys because another doctor several years back told me PPIs burn up my kidneys. He quickly dismissed this and said he totally disagreed. He said if i had any issues i wouldnt have normal urinalysis, creatine, bun and gfr and that it would be very evident even from early on if meds were causing a problem. He said with me also noticing back pain from changes in physical stressors such as longer driving across the state, uncomfortable bed and possible heavy work in construction he felt 100% that the pains were muscular and further testing wasnt neccesary.
Does this sound correct?

Brief Answer:
Repetitive strain injury most likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM

I have gone through your query. Your problem can be most likely due to Repetitive strain injury which is same as your doctor said. As creatinine , BUN , gfr and urine analysis are normal nothing to worry about kidney problems. But better to have an ultrasound examination of abdomen and pelvis if pain is severe to rule out problems like kidney stones.

For RSI (repetitive strain injury) correct your postures while sitting , driving , working and sleeping. Sleep on hard mattress , better to use orthopaedic pillow for neck and avoid normal pillows. Keeping a pillow under knee is also good. You can also do hot fomentations on back at home with the help of some one.
NSAIDs and muscle relaxants will be helpful to get relief. You can also go for physiotherapy like massage. Physiotherapist will teach you muscle relaxation tecniques and exercises also. If no improvement then a consultation with orthopaedician is well appreciated.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.

He asked about kidney stone type symptoms but said with no blood cells in urine and my pain being on both sides and more of a soreness, he didnt think it was stones. He did say if i notice sharp or increased pain to get seen because it can be painful and may even require a procedure.
Like i said, my biggest concern is taking care of myself. I dont like taking meds every day and want to be aware of how to be able to know if something is damaging.

Brief Answer:
As your routine analysis are within normal limits nothing to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again

Thank you for your follow up.

As your routine analysis are within normal limits there is nothing to worry. You don't need to take medicine for long time. If there is more discomfort you can take NSAIDs or muscle relaxants. Other wise you can go on with physiotherapy , muscle strengthening exercises and hot fomentations. You can also use gels containing NSAIDs like diclofenac or ketoprofen , methylsalicylate and capsaicin for local application.

If you have any unusual urinary or gastric symptoms then you can suspect some thing is damaging. As you don't have such symptoms no need to worry.

If there is no improvement with above measures then you can go for an ultrasound examination to make sure everything is fine. Orthopedic consultation also can be done in such case to make sure your spine and intervertebral discs are normal.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
