Suggest Treatment For Severe Chills

Question: My husband was laying on the sofa and suddenly came down with extreme chills all over. I put him in a hot shower, which didn't help much. And then he threw up. He's thinking food poisoning, but I'm not sure about that. Do you have an idea of what caused this and how to handle it? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Some practical advises.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using Healthcaremagic to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

What I would recommend is:
- Measure his fever and in case it is more then 37 degrees Celsius give him a table of Acetaminohen 500mg.
- Give him bismuth if you have an at home.
- Fluids: frequent but small amounts (one sip every 5 minutes) so he will substitute the fluids in his body gradually and prevent dehydration.
- If he has stomach ache give him Omeprazole 20mg or an antiacid.
- When he has appetite I recommend a diet with BRAT (banana-rice-apple-toast). But for now do not worry about food, just drinking fluids it is very important.
- It is just the beginning of this condition so we will take care depending on how it will develop.

...It may be a food poisoning or a viral gastrointestinal infection- He may start having fever, diarrhea, fatigues, ect/
...It may be something more serious- for now just watch him closely and follow up with me. He doesn't need to go to the ER and also he doesn't need other medications.

Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you need more clarifications.

Thank you. He's feeling better. I think he did have a fever, but now his head feels more clammy. He's resting and drinking liquids.
