Question: Hi doctor,
my wife has a cough, and tonight accidentally inhaled the cough medicine she was taking - called old XXXXXXX cherry bark cough syrup. now she can't stop coughing and it hurts her to breathe. will this pass, or is there something we should do?

Hello dear,welcome to HCM forum.
The said syrup is an herbal preparation,and its inhalation perse is unlikely to exaggerate the cough(unless she has aspirated into lungs).
Anyhow,as she is having sever cough with breathing difficulty,a chest examination is a must to look for features like wheeze/crepitations etc.
If she is not having fever,and chest is clear on examination,this just need antihistamines like levocetirezine and cough suppressants like codeine for a few days.
Otherwise,this may also demand the use of antibiotics &/ bronchodilators.
Kindly see your doctor for proper examination and treatment accordingly.
Meanwhile,keep away from cold/dusty atmosphere.
Avoid direct blow to face from fan/AC vent.
