Question: My husband has had body and head aches for the last two days. He has developed a bad cough. Ran a low fever. This morning he started to cough and he passed out for a few seconds. It sounded like he was gagging. Does he just have the flu? We took his blood pressure it was a little high, his pulse was 65. He says he feels terrible. He has been taking Tylenol for his fever and cough drops for his cough. He has been drinking fluids and resting. What do you suggest we do?

Brief Answer:
Possibly influenza

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

This does sound like influenza, which is present in communities around the country now. It typically causes a cough, muscle aches, headache, sometimes joint aching, fever, and fatigue.

That flu is the most likely cause, based on his symptoms and that flu is going around, doesn't mean it is absolutely not something else. If the cough becomes productive of infected looking sputum then he should go in for a chest X-ray to make sure it isn't pneumonia. He should also go in if his symptoms get progressively worse (higher fever, not drinking, etc).

He should definitely continue to push fluids and rest.

Take care that you don't get it too: try to be conscious of not touching your eyes or nose with your hands unless you have just thoroughly washed your hands and not touched anything else after.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
