Suggest Treatment For Severe Dizziness And Vomiting

Posted on Wed, 23 Mar 2016
Question: For about a 5 month period, frequently I would start having these awful symptoms. I would suddenly start feeling extremely dizzy, to the point I couldn't tell if I was upside down, laying down or standing. my vision was so blurry i couldnt see. then I would have severe stomach pains and violent vomiting. I would lose control of my body, I mean I couldn't reach for a glass of water and when I would try to, my body wouldnt not function at all. my legs would be completely paralyzed, I couldn't make my legs take steps. it would last on the average of a hour or two each episode. I would go to the emergency room and be admitted and doctors did spinal taps and run every test they could do but they couldn't find anything that would explain it. it stopped as suddenly as it started. I don't have any food or drug allergies. I don't understand what was happening and it was so terrifying. one doctor came to the conclusion that it was vertigo but I know that there is no way that was vertigo. I was 41 years old and I had recently been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. I just don't understand what could have been happening to me and why it just all of a sudden stopped. I was wondering maybe you would have some idea what was wrong with me?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.
I have read your query and understand your concern.

You describe neurological symptoms that have undergone extensive testing, showing no organic or neurological cause. This is referred to as a conversion disorder. When the brain is stressed, it can mimic neurologic symptoms as a way of relieving this stress. The treatment is ongoing psychotherapy with a psychiatrist who specializes in psychosomatic disorders.
