Suggest Treatment For Severe Dry Cough In A Child

Question: Hello- my daughter is 6 years old and she has been suffering with pretty bad cough (dry cough) for the past 3 days. She barely slept last night because of the cough. I am unable to get a paediatric appointment to show her to a doc in person. Could you please advise? Any advice or prescription would really help.
Brief Answer:
Most likely allergic cough
Detailed Answer:
Hi
I understand your concerns but don't worry. The most likely reason for these symptoms in a child is allergic, viral, atypical bacterial coughs. We advice the following for 6 years old child for these symptoms:
- Syp. Azithromycin (200mg/5ml) 5 ml once daily for 5 days.
- A bronchodilator such as Syp. albuterol (5 ml thrice daily). This will help in night coughs.
- Antihistamine such as Syp. Chlorpheniramine for allergic tendency.
- You may give acetaminophen for fever spikes if they occur.
Ensure regular feeds and plenty of fluids to maintain hydration.
Take care
