Question: Hi my 84 year old father has been experiencing pain in his right lower side of his back and side. The pain can jab and pretty much incapacitate him and then he can run down the stairs the next. He's been to the doctors for this a few times and they ran blood work and at first thought he had a UTI so he was put on anti-biotics. By the end of that week his pain was so bad that I called the dr. and asked for something to help with his pain over the weekend until they could see him on Monday. They prescribed a common pain med. TRAMADOL but it does not really help. They have him going to physical therapy for a strained back but this is going on week 4 and he's so frustrated. He is a Prostate Cancer survivor of 20+ years and takes some hormone shot once every six months and his PSA levels are below .0 What do you recommend??? Thank you!

Brief Answer:
back pain can be from spine

Detailed Answer:

hi,

Back pain in lower back on rt side can be from spine and para-spinal muscles. If the pain increases on movement kike turning in bed or bending down then that is from muscles and bone. in that case physiotherapy, xray of spine to rule out and wedging, fracture or dislocation, may need mri of spine.

in case of prostate cancer- concern is of recurrence and for that we need a resent PSA and if high suspicion then a Tc bone scan ( Nuclear medicine).

Ultrasound of abdomen is a fair screening test to rule out any illness in internal organs like kidney, pancreas, liver.

so with this fresh information try to find out the cause.

if any other inputs feel free to ask again

best wishes
