Suggest Treatment For Severe Lower Back Pain Post A Fusion Surgery

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jan 2017
Question: I had a back fusion surgery in 2002 of discs l4, 5 and 6.. I went to see my primary on Tuesday this week complaining of lower back pain that radiates to my right hip. I asked for x-rays to be taken and today I received a phone call from my primary saying that he's referring me to an ortho-neuro surgeon. What could possibly be wrong?

Brief Answer:
Can be due to further spondylosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A lower back pain that radiates to the hip many years after a lower back surgery is likely to be due to progression of the disc prolapse or spondylottic changes in the back that are causing a further nerve compression.
These are age related degenerative changes in the spine that gradually keep on progressing if proper regular physiotherapy for a flexible spine is not done.
I hope this answers your query.

Could it be that I may need to have surgery done? Can the problem be fixed having surgery done again or would it not be recommended?Would surgery be recommended, or should I stear away from it?

Brief Answer:
Depends on severity.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Surgery is needed or not depends on the severity of the problem. Since there is only pain the nerve compression is likely to be mild and can be treated with medicines. You can delay the surgery with proper treatment.
