Suggest Treatment For Severe Skin Allergy

Posted on Thu, 3 Nov 2016
Question: Hi Doctor,

I'm suffering from severe skin allergy and am confused on what to do.

Background: At the age of 16 I had the first sun burn while playing for 6-7 hours in sun daily. Doctor suggested some treatment and I was better in a month. The burn was pretty severe and resulted into boils on my skin. I have had many pimples on my face, as suggested by my doctor I started using Betnovate N for pimples which led to Rosacea. At the age of 20, I tried to cure my pimples but the treatment turned out to worsen my case. The medicines reacted and I got many marks on the face due to it.

Now my condition is that I've recently went for a vacation and my there's a reaction from the Sunscreen used by me and sun burn both mixed. My skin is burning like hell, I saw a doctor and he advised me to use Tab Minoz twice a day for 2 weeks, apply Metrogyl gel for 2 weeks one in night only on the face and Tab Cetrizine once in the night for a week.

I did as advised for 1 night and when I woke up and washed my face it started burning, my hand are itching. Please help.

Hello and welcome to HCM
I'm Dr Dinah and I'll be answering your queries today.
From your history you seem to have extremely sensitive skin, which has been further affected by wrong treatment on past occasions.
Presently I am not sure if you are still suffering from acne and rosacea, though it can keep coming back at your age. Never apply strong steroid creams like betnovate on skin esp face, for acne. It is for short term use under strict observation by dermatologist, and only for severe allergies, etc with infection.
Now for the scars, there are several treatment options available, but most creams are strong, and other methods like chemical peels, Lasers ,etc, mostly will react with your sensitive skin. it is important to keep your skin clean, oil free, use products specifically for sensitive skin, without added fragrances and colours. Do not pick on or squeeze any acne.
In case you still suffer from occasional redness, rosacea consult a dermatologist regarding a product called Erythygo gel for face. Lasers also can be considered after observing your skin.
As for your present complaints of repeated sunburn, sun screen does not generally cause reactions, but in future be sure to use a sunscreen with high SPF for sensitive skin, such as neutrogena. Check the details when you purchase.make sure they are hypoallergenic and fragrance free. Reapply every 3-5 hours after sun exposure or sweating.
For now, continue the cetrizine for a few more days till the burning and redness subsides. Apply calamine with aloe vera or a menthol lotion like Sarna 2-3 times to cool the skin. You can apply a mild steroid like fluticasone daily for a week for the allergy to come down. If it is very severe you may need an injection of the same. Metrogyl gel can be avoided as you may be sensitive to it. Minoz tablets must be taken carefully and only if you have no signs of allergy to it and no increase in rashes. if you do not have any blisters or boils at the moment, it is better to avoid the Minoz and metrogyl since you already have burning and itching. Observe and see if it will relieve with just Cetrizine, Calamine and Fluticasone cream.
Stay out of the sun completely till healed. Once it is better, remember to always use sunscreen.
Keep a list of drugs that you are allergic to whenever you see a doctor.
Feel free to upload pics of any new rashes or allergy you have.
Do get back to me with any doubts and clarifications you have.
Take care.

Hi Dr. Dinah,

Thanks for your answer. I'm uploading pics of rashes I have currently. Also, I've stopped Minoz and Metrogyl completely. As advised by you, I've applied aloe vera on a small patch of the affected skin.

Also, I'm doubting that the sunscreen would have reacted as I was wearing a full sleeves T-Shirt and did not roll my sleeves up for the whole time but still got these rashes in my hands as well. Can this be a case that I would have to use sunscreen for my everyday interactions with sun? I really love to go out on beaches but every time I go, I end up in this situation.

Thanks,
XXXX

Hi XXXX, thanks for getting back to me.
I have not received any images but I shall check on them later as they get uploaded.
Aloe vera and calamine can be applied generously on the skin. It also helps in healing with lesser scarring. Fluticasone will help the allergy so apply once a day only on the rashes for a few days and stop.
Your allergy may have been due to some other creams, dust, sand, plants, new foods, medicines or anything at all that you developed allergy to during your vacation. many allergies get further aggravated on sun exposure. In any case, since your skin is sensitive it is always better to use products suitable for sensitive skin.
Avoid long periods of sun exposure usually between 10am-4pm. At present, don't expose to sun till the entire skin is completely healed. Wear covered clothes.
Sunscreen must be part of everyone's daily routine. It is not only for beaches and vacation time. Make a habit of using it even when you go out for a short while. It will protect your skin from future problems as well. Make it a part of your daily regimen 15-20 mins before going out. Take extra precaution while on vacation and reapply regularly with good water resistant sunscreen.
Don't worry. It just needs a little care.
