Suggest Treatment For Short Term Memory Problem

Question: Some short- term memory dysfunction. Difficulty in remembering recent names. As a former Pathologist,
my memory of etiology and facts of many diseases is much worse than 5 or 10 years ago. I have been trying to get involved so-called brain activities and with more reading but I'm often not able to remember many details nearly as well as in the past. I have been retired for about 9 years and just had my 71st birthday. My family physician wants me to get some neurological tests, which of course is reasonable, but I'm a little concerned about the "fallout" from the test results. I am wondering if I should go to a super
experienced specialist, on my own, in say XXXXXXX or Pittsburgh? (where I did my training). I am interested in getting some additional ideas on what to do.
I am currently on Fluoxetine 20 mg. By the way I have been diagnosed with ADD about 5 or 6 years ago. I am taking Adderall now.

Brief Answer:
Mild cognitive impairment. Neurological evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

Condition you refer is known also as mild cognitive impairment, a intermediate state between normal aging cognitive problems and dementia.

It doesn't mean that you necessarily will develop dementia, but you are in increased risk.

Besides neuropsychologycal tests used to evaluate your mental status, a neurological examination, brain imaging (MRI) and blood test to measure vitamin B12 are needed to have a correct understanding of your condition.

So, besides evaluation by your primary care Doctor, I think it is necessary and an evaluation by a Neurologist.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Greetings.
