Suggest Treatment For Side Effects Of Nexium
Question: I have had hiatal hernia for 1 year and have used PPI (nexium)for that time. However I got bad side effects from PPI so I wanted to get surgery but the 48h Bravo was negative. I did get lots of burning in the throat area so I guess I have gas acid reflux which the test cannot detect. I had 24hr probe before but was also negative (that time I had no complaints though during the test)
I really don't want to take PPI anymore because it feels really bad when urinating/sore feeling in penis area + erectile dyfsunction but it keeps burning in my throat (tried different other meds but they don't really work) I must be getting acid rebound so I want to try to wean off the PPI I took 75% of the dosage today but already I get this bad sore feeling in the penis area. My question is what is wiser to keep taking PPI dosages now and lessen the dosage over the coming weeks or deal with the burning and hopefully it will get less after several weeks? I am afraid of doing damage by taking PPI at all now

Hi and thank you for asking on HCM!
I read carefully all your concern and I can say as follows:
1. You are reporting to have had side effects from PPI's usage. at this point I would suggest another optional treatment with anti-H2 drugs like zantac and antacids like gaviscon.
2. If there is no improvement than you can use PPI's with a low dosage like 20 mg /day and Zantac 300 mg at bed time.
So you can avoid PPI's side effects in long term use.
So to my opinion there is no need to start PPI's now but start antacids and anti -H2 drugs.
Hope it was helpful to you.

I had already tried Zantac before when I was off PPI for a test, it did not work. I use Gaviscon Advance after every meal already, it does not help the burning in throat at the moment. I can take an even lower PPI dose today (20 mg) and the coming time but still it's taking PPI and a afraid it will still hurt the penile area which seems very bad to me so maybe if I still have the side effect when on lower dose PPI I should just let my throat burn...the acid rebound effect is causing the extreme burn I guess, don't know how dangerous this is and what is wiser to suffer in penile area or burn for several weeks maybe months to come
took 2/3 of the 40 mg today and already problems with urinating (slow, kinda painful and trouble finishing) Feels very bad. Burning throat seems to be getting less but I think I prefer that to penile area feeling sore and trouble urinating

Hi back,
Thank you for giving more of your medical information.
You are reporting that even with 20 mg of PPI you are having truble in urinating.
I would like to know if you have chsanged PPI's drugs. It means that you have used only Nexium or you have tried other PPI's drugs like rabeprazole that is a new geneeation of PPI 's drugs with less side effects that the other and more powerful.
I would suggest to try rabeprazole 20 mg per day and let's hoep that you are not going to have the same symptoms.
Hope it was helpful to you.
