Question: My son is 16, no fever, he has sinus congestion and has bloody drainage through his ear. There is no ear pain or problem hearing. Can he have drainage without infection?

Brief Answer:
Very unlikely to do drainage without an infection!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for using HCM.

I am so sorry to hear about ear discharge that your son has. Congestion is the most likely cause. We do ear drainage when we think there is a purulent collection in the ear. This is clearly not the case with your son at this point. Maybe from forceful blowing of the nostrils, he caused some damage to fragile vessels in the ear which caused this. I will suggest that you monitor and if it doesn't stop spontaneously with 24 hours, then you should seek medical consultation. Starting with a primary acre physician for examination would be great. For now, monitoring would do. Let him avoid manipulation of the ear and blows the nostrils in a more gentle way.

I hope this helps. If you need more information, please do not hesitate to ask more questions and we would gladly address them.

do we do anything else to clean out his ear or just let it drain? Do you think using a sinus wash, neti pot, will help?

Brief Answer:
For the ears, put a cotton plug to absorb. No ear droplets!

Detailed Answer:
HI,

I will recommend you put a cotton plug just to absorb any liquids. Otherwise, no solution or ear droplets should be put inside.

I wish you well and keep me updated with progress.
