Question: I'm fifty years old and I find myself sleeping for 8-10 hrs per night. Because I work for myself I normally go to bed around 9pm and arise around 9am. I can go to my office @10am and find myself falling off to sleep after just getting out of bed. I'm sleepy and tired for some strange reason. Please tell me what could be possibly going on.

Brief Answer:
Sleep apnea

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You have been feeling tired and sleepy despite getting 8-10 hours of sleep. This could be a sign of slep apnea. Despite you being unconscious you may not be getting the restful sleep you need to feel rested. This is usually caused by arousals during the night which is breaking up your effective sleep. The best option to determine if you have sleep apnea or other sleep disorder is to have sleep study. Your doctor would need to order one and get it scheduled. The sleep test is usually done in a sleep lab. You are hooked up to monitors and then asked to sleep. They monitor your breathing, EKG and movement during the night. They can then accurately tell you if you have a sleep problem.

I recommend that you ask your doctor for a sleep study so you can correct what ever is impairing your sleep
