Suggest Treatment For Sore, Itchy And Dry Throat

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: I have been having the following symptoms for 6-8 weeks. Tickly scratchy throat, hoarseness, itchy Eustachian tubes. Slight sore throat, slight dry cough, at times seem slightly short of breath. I went to an ENT thinking laryngeal throat cancer. He did an exam and looked down my throat with a small fiber optic scope and saw no cancer but noticed redness. He commented that my back tongue relatively large and it may be keeping acid from my stomach keeping it in the back of my throat. He noted I was on Omeprazole and believes I have atypical acid reflux. He suggested increase Omeprazole twice a day and elevating my head when sleeping.
My question is it ahs been now 3 weeks and though the symptoms lessened, I still have similar ones . I saw on a handout he gave me that it could take weeks and months to heal. I have not lost weight, I can swallow without issue, I do not choke or anything like that.
Is there a chance he may have missed something more serious. Do I need to still give this time to resolve? Is a second exam and scope recommended?

Brief Answer:
You are most probably having combination of allergic PND & LPR.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.

I have read your query , reviewed your medications and understand your concern.

As per your clinical history it appears that you are most probably having combination of allergic post nasal discharge (PND) & laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) . It result into chronic laryngitis .

If I were your treating doctor , I would advice
Saline nasal rinse or spray thrice daily ,
salt water gargle twice daily ,
Tab paracetamol for soreness &
Combination Steroid nasal spray with antihistamine 2 puff each nostril twice daily for allergy .

Continue Omeprazole .

You will get relief .

You can discuss this with your treating doctor & get prescription for Combination Steroid nasal spray .

No need to worry about any serious problem. This will require 4-8 weeks treatment to resolve completely .

No need for second exam and scope .

Hope this information helpful to you .If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Regards.
