Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat, Nausea And Lack Of Appetite
Question: Hello,
I am sixty years old, in reasonably good health until a recent event. I thought I had the flu at the end of March with sore throat, fever, body aches, skin and teeth ache, cough. Since then I have continued to be ill. My joints are now extremely painful, still spiking a fever of 100 (my normal temp is around 97) productive cough, exhausted, nausea, no appetite. I finally went to the e.r. and was put on a course of augmentin early yesterday. They did a lymes panel, pending. CBC with diff pending. I continue with sneezing, coughing, aching, fever, headache. Do you think it could be other than the bronchitis the Dr. diagnosed. My husband has been just as ill, same exact symptoms inc. joint pain.

Regarding your concern, and based on your history you should know that the flu symptoms usually don't last more than 5 days and many symptoms of Lyme disease mimic signs of other illnesses, including even the flu.
So, in your case, I do agree with your doctor because I think that other than bronchitis this could be a chronic Lyme disease and you should wait to see the test results (EIA and Western blot) for Lyme disease in order to start the right treatment.

My lymes test results are negative. The big issue is I have very low WBCs and was told to see my primary tomorrow. Since this means I have a compromised immune system and a yet to be determined cause, should I really be on Augmentin? Isn't it not recommended for people with immune system problems.

Related your concern you should know that usually we use antibiotics (augmentin etc) in immunocompromised people when we suppose they have infections.
So, it is not contraindicated to use augmentin in immune compromised person in this situation.
Furthermore related your low WBC, I don't know your sexual history but I suggest to exclude HIV (4th generation HIV test) and as well to exclude sarcoidosis disease and TB ( do thoracal scan CT) and to meet an hematologist (to exclude a blood problem like bone marrow disfunction) .
