Suggest Treatment For Soreness And Hardness At An Incision Site Post A Thyroidectomy

Was wondering why my surgical site in my neck is still very sore & tight & hard & lumpy 5 weeks post total thryroidectomy and feels like it still has surgical tape on. Hope you may have an answer thank you
There are some local treatment that help healing the scar.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I can understand your concern.
Neck scars are unpredictable. In some cases, the scars heal as a thin line while in other cases, they may be extremely thickened. One of the reasons why neck scars do not heal as well is because we cannot completely immobilize the neck during the healing phase. Thus, the body deposits more collagen in the area in order to prevent the incision line from dehiscing.
Most scars should start settling down at 2-3 months.
The goals of therapy are to modulate the scar early on, in order to decrease the chance of its thickening; the massage is impossible do to pain, as you mentioned. Other options include application of silicone sheeting, injection of cortisone, and laser treatment is suggested some times to reduce the redness and make it flatter. It may be started after the first month of surgery.
So i would recommend to consider speaking to a plastic surgeon about the above mentioned options in order to prevent a permanent scar.
Hope the information will help.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta
