Suggest Treatment For Spot In Field Of Vision

Posted on Mon, 19 Jan 2015
Question: I developed a spot in my field of vision this weekend, unilateral in right eye. The spot appears to cover approximately 3/4 of a 360 degree circle, right in middle of right eye visual field, and appears yellow and blue/purple. Also within this spot any text I try to read on television or a book with right eye only, the text is distorted like looking in a fun house mirror, wavy, squeezed from top to bottom or side to side. I do wear bifocals and was on cusp of new eye exam and glasses. No history of any pathology in my eyes at all, other than usual age related need for bifocals, Last eye exam was 5 years ago and perfectly normal. Thank you very much.

Brief Answer:
This indicates posterior vitreous detachment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic.

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.
I reviewed your history.

It seems from the history that you are having sudden onset of seeing a spot in the visual field.
The most common cause responsible for this symptom in your age group is posterior vitreous detachment. Vitreous is a liquid jelly which fills the posterior part of the eye and it lies between lens and retina. It gets liquefied with increasing age and it gets detached from its posterior attachments resulting in posterior vitreous detachment. It occurs in more than 50% of people who are aged more than 60 years and its incidence increases with increasing age.

Most of the times it will not cause any problem and the symptoms will become in lesser in severity and resolve. However in few cases complications like retinal tear, retinal hemorrhage can be seen. Hence this requires examination of the posterior segment of the eye by indirect ophthalmoscopy by an ophthalmologist.

Hence I advice you to consult your ophthalmologist for examination and advice accordingly. If the examination comes as normal then no need to worry and it will resolve and no treatment is required generally.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Thank you for the information. I am a registered nurse now working in medical transcription, and have seen this many times, so I do have a high level of general knowledge concerning a great many medical conditions. Is there an ball park estimate of time frame it will take to resolve itself, if it will and if there is no other pathology in the eye?

Brief Answer:
It usually takes 2-3 months or more.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

The black spots arising from vitreous degeneration and vitreous detachment will become less and less noticeable as the time increases. Usually it takes 2-3 months or still longer depending on the site and amount of degeneration or detachment.
However examination of retina as I advised in the previous answer is necessary to look for and to treat associated retinal conditions like retinal tear at the earliest to prevent complications like retinal detachment.

Hence I advised you for a examination by a ophthalmologist by indirect ophthalmoscopy.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Thank you
With regards
