Suggest Treatment For Stomach Aches And Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2015
Question: Hello doctor:) the past couple of days I have been eating a high protein paleo diet and have just decided to quit because it has been giving me terrible stomach aches, I'm guessing because I have Non alcoholic fatty liver. I threw up about 30 minutes ago and out came two gelatin like black blobs that were about and inch long and thick. Do you have any idea what they could have been, and what kind of diet would you recommend for someone with a bad liver?

Brief Answer:
Undigested food noted;following diet for bad liver...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

1. A paleo diet consists of eating mostly lean meats, fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts, seeds, olive/walnut oil.

You are saying that this diet is making you throwing up. The two gelatin like black blobs that you saw coming out is undigested food (depending on what you have consumed before vomiting).

2. Non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by accumulation of fat in the liver. This is because your liver can't break down the fat (internal factors) and/or if your diet is rich in saturated fat and processed foods that overloads the liver (making it harder to break them down).

The diet in such cases is to:
- avoid overloading your liver: avoid processed foods, saturated fats; eat fruits, vegetables, drink more water
What makes the difference here is the use of whole grains which are not used when following paleo diet.
- help your liver work better: by increasing physical activity; sometimes, potent antioxidants like vit.E can be a good choice
- avoid drinking alcohol or using OTC medications unnecessarily
- check your cholesterol and blood sugar levels; sometimes, these can be triggering/aggravating factors for NAFLD; if you have such problems, diet and physical activity will help control them, consequently, improving your liver condition.

Hope it was of help! Let me know if you have further queries!
