Suggest Treatment For Streptococcal Pharyngitis
You require cough suppressants rather than expectorants.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,
Majority of cases throat pain are due to viral infection(EB virus, adenovirus) but in some cases it might be related to bacterial infection (streptococcal pharyngitis).
We differentiate the cause through routine blood counts with throat examination, pharyngoscopy to rule out non infective causes.
Therefore it is advisable to see the doctor,Preferably ENT specialist for complete medical history including history of sensitivity to antibiotics and thoroughly clinical examination.
The medicines you had taken are good like Cefuroxime Axetil is a very good broad spectrum bactericidal drug but it is not the first choice for upper respiratory tract infections rather we have drugs like levofloxacin or ofloxacin (quinolones group) or azithromycin (macrolides group) which are the first choice and much better than any other antibiotics as far as the respiratory tract infection are concern.
You might require antibiotics as i mentioned above (to prevent super infection if cause is viral) with analgesics, antiinflammatories, antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer combination (montelukast with levocetrizine) and steam inhalation 2 to 3 times a day.
Here, you should not take cheratussin Ac syrup as it contains Guaiphenesin which is an expectorant and helps to loosen congestion in your chest and throat, making it easier to cough out through your mouth. You do not seem to be congestive symptoms here as per your description, rather you have dry, irritating cough and sore throat.
Means you actually require cough suppressants like antihistamine rather than cough expectorants.
You can also have warm salt water gargles which helps to get relief from throat soreness and irritation.
I hope it will clear to you now that what exact treatment is to be taken in your case.
Consult ENT specialist for further advise.
Thanks and Regards,
