Suggest Treatment For Swelling In The Ankles
Question: My wife, age 77, fell and twisted her ankle two days ago. The ankle is swollen and badly bruised. Question: Is there a danger of blood clots from the bruised area reaching the brain, and if so what to do about it?

there is increased risk of deep vein thrombosis which may be potentially dangerous since it could cause brain clot. However,this risk is pretty low and depends on several factors such as heart condition,obesity and degree of mobility. In every case, she should put elastic compress around the ankle, avoid longer sitting or laying, and do passive exercises of lower leg muscles( moving foot up-and-coming down from time to time). If you think that she wouldn't be able to follow these instructions,or there is associated heart or blood disorder then she should see doctor,who will do xrays and evaluate if anticoagulant therapy and immobilization are required.Wish you good health.
